To get Dual Citizenship (German and American), you will need a "Beibehaltsgenehmigung" (Retention Approval) from the German Consulate BEFORE applying for American Citizenship. It is recommendable to apply for a "Staatsangehörigkeitsurkunde" (Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status).
